Top 5 Up-and-Coming Female Startupers in Boston to Follow on Twitter!

Candice Cabe, CEO and Founder of Day2NightHeels

Candice Cabe

On Sunday afternoon we posted an article about the top 12 female CEOs in the Boston area to follow on Twitter. In creating that post, we hoped women in the startup community, established or up-and-coming, would take heed and follow that list, and based on the activity we’ve seen on Twitter targeting that post, we were right!

This goes to show that our prediction at BostInnovation that women are starting to make more moves in the entrepreneurial space in Boston was fair. The entrepreneurial ecosystem around us is full of women who are starting companies or want to be involved in one way or another in the startup community — call them ladypreneurs.

Let’s welcome these five women to the startup ecosystem and stoke the startup fire for more women to go after their dreams and build their startups from ground zero. Here is a little bit about their startups — none of which have been featured yet on BostInno. After each capsule, you’ll find a tweet from them in italics we found relevant and useful.

Candice Cabe – Day2Night Convertible Heels@day2nightheels

If you are like myself and a lot of other women in Boston, you often put flats in your bag when wearing heels to work or an event, then when you walk home you put on the flats. Candice has created a solution to this problem with a convertible sized heel to help you feel more comfortable at work or play. She just kicked off her company at Startup Weekend Boston, so let’s help her build her Twitter following! (more…)

Crowd Favorite DoInk Takes Home WebInno Audience Choice Award

WebInno 26 June 2010

WebInno 26 attendees gather for the "Main Dish" presentations

Last week, BostInnovation Editor Kyle Psaty predicted that this summer’s Web Innovators Group (WebInno) would the biggest yet and he may well have been right.

Last night, WebInno –the Boston startup scene’s biggest tech event — drew a hoard of attendees and nine hot startups to the Royal Sonnesta in Cambridge. New York City’s Milabra, Waltham’s DoInk, and Needham’s Chargify were Webinno’s three “Main Dishes” presenters, and each demoed in front of an audience comprised of angels, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, developers, and community leaders. DoInk took home Webinno’s “Audience Choice Award” as the favorite startup after a killer presentation.

WebInno was founded by Venrock VC David Beisel five years ago and last night was the 26th WebInno.

WebInno 26 a Must-Attend Event for Noobs, Expected to be Bigger Than Ever

WebInno is BIG in Boston

When the first Web Innovators Group (WebInno) kicked off five years ago, creator David Beisel could never have imagined it would become the biggest quarterly tech event in the Greater Boston Area.

That first WebInno took place at Tavern in the Square near Harvard, back in the summer of 2005. It included a dozen or so of Beisel’s friends from the startup community, each of whom wore a name tag. The group gathered around a table to talk about innovation.

“The next time we did it, I encouraged everyone who attended the first one to bring a friend. Then 20 people came. The third time, 40 or 45 came. That’s when I knew there was really a need for people to congregate,” said Beisel.

WebInno moved to a different location each time as it grew. It was always in Cambridge, at places like Tommy Doyles and The Blue Room.

“On the third or fourth time, I introduced the notion of having companies give demos. I had three self-funded startups present their products,” he remembered.

The nametags are still part of WebInno, which returns to its now permanent home at the Royal Sonesta next Monday evening for its 26th installment. According to the WebInno Eventbrite page, more than 1,000 attendees have already pre-registered. WebInno has grown with the local scene.

“WebInno has been a reflection of what’s been happening in the area,” said Beisel.

The demos are still a crucial part of this must-attend networking event. (more…)
