Q&A: Cort Johnson: Not Easy to Poke Holes in

DartBoston Logo

Cort Johnson is Co-Founder of DartBoston

Every scene needs a face — the guy or gal who becomes synonymous with what the community is trying to achieve. That person is normally passionate, and always has conviction to make a difference by articulating complex concepts whilst coming across as someone you could sit and watch sports with.

Cortlandt Johnson of DartBoston is one of those people.

Cort Johnson

When you meet him, he smiles broadly and shakes your hand, pressing the flesh with as much enthusiasm as he puts into the various factions that make up DartBoston. His community of ambitious entrepreneurs and professionals have become part of the tech networking scene in Boston, putting on events all over town and ensuring that those under thirty have full access to individuals with similar drives and ambitions.

Recently, Johnson was named to the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange (MITX) Future Leaders Group for 2010. It’s the first time the local trade organization and non-profit has assembled a crack team of young entrepreneurs, and they certainly picked a distinguished bunch.

A few days ago, Cort agreed to give me some of his valuable time so that I could get an insight into what makes him tick. We met outside Barnes and Noble, grabbed a coffee and tried to find somewhere quiet for a chinwag — not the easiest thing to do in a mall. Settling into a comfy chair at the Sheraton, he looked the consummate young professional in a button down shirt, slacks, and polished brown shoes. As the sights and sounds of a busy hotel rushed around him, he was fully committed to giving me his complete attention. (more…)

DEMO Challenge: Matt Marshall & Co. Visit Boston

demogod

DEMO was in Boston last night!

Last night, I walked in to FELT on Washington Street, and I was promptly met with the excitement I had heard the DEMO conference was known for.  Matt Marshall, the editor at Venture Beat and the producer of DEMO is an amazing ambassador for entrepreneurs all around the globe.

DEMO is criss-crossing the country on their innovation tour, and of course Marshall mentioned that Boston is one of the DEMO team’s favorite startup communities.  Last night, six hand-selected companies got the opportunity to pitch the crowd of investors, fellow entrepreneurs and members of the press. Each company was supposed to pitch for three minutes, though a couple chose to ignore DEMO Coordinator  Neal Silverman’s “time is up” signal. (Anyone out there have an App to help with this?)

Marshall made it a point to excite the crowd about the current entrepreneurial climate, explaining to the audience that there is no better time than in a recession to be starting a company. Entrepreneurs will be the ones creating the jobs that our country needs.  As Matt put it, “What wakes me up everyday are the companies. What drives me everyday are the companies.” Everyone at this event certainly seemed on board with Marshall’s message, with much excitement surrounding the companies and products in the room. (more…)

Hire 5: Boston IT Companies Making Additions

It’s not just a high five; it’s the Hire 5.

Bring on the fun! ...I mean money!

Bring on the fun! ...I mean money!

Okay, maybe the name is a little cheesey — we can admit that — but the news isn’t.

As we reported last month, Boston’s IT sector has been steadily growing since 2004 despite the recession. That means people have been joining IT companies in Boston at a steady rate, a trend that appears to be continuing. This is the first in an ongoing series of posts about cool Boston companies looking to grow, and what positions they’re hiring.

Without further adieu, here are today’s Hire 5: (more…)

A text message when your table is ready? I wish I'd thought of that.

Look out Boston; it may be that the way we reserve tables is being revolutionized right across the Charles River.

The SMS based notification system has already been installed in two restaurants in the Boston area, so you can check it out for yourself. (Who would have thought being an early-adopter could taste so good?) (more…)
