Breaking news coming from the mobile cave downstairs here at the The Hangout Hub. Two fast growing mobile companies are partnering to bring location based discounts to the mass market. According to a press release and exclusive interviews yesterday, Peekaboo Mobile, one of the fastest growing mobile coupon providers in Boston, is joining forces with CardStar, the most widely used loyalty card mobile application, to offer coupons and promotions through the Peekaboo Mobile Card.
This is a huge win for both companies and the mobile-based discounts industry in general. Currently the Peekaboo Mobile App is only available on the iPhone, but with the new Peekaboo Mobile Card on CardStar’s app, the company’s discounts become available on Android and Blackberry as well. CardStar gains access to Peekaboo’s network of local businesses and provides a consolidated application for all of your coupons and loyalty cards. “It’s all about convenience. Save money with loyalty cards and new coupons all in one place” said Mike Fruzetti co-founder of Peekaboo Mobile in an interview yesterday. Andy Miller, CEO of CardStar, adds, “The addition of Peekaboo’s Card to CardStar’s cache of rewards cards offers yet another touch point for our users to discover and use coupons from their preferred retailers and brands and reap the cost saving benefits of these discounts.”

One of the hottest trends in technology today is location-based services (LBS). GPS and other location positioning technologies are some of the key ingredients in the next stage of mobile computing. And I’m not just talking about car nav systems or Google Maps on your iPhone.
Today’s emerging hit services such as Foursquare are built on the idea of being able to share where you are. And as smartphones get smarter, companies like Google and Apple are building new technologies that will transform the way we search, network, shop, and much more… all thanks to location.

Kate Imbach, VP of Marketing at Skyhook
Without launching a satellite into space, few companies have had as much of an impact on location positioning as Boston-based Skyhook Wireless. Since first introducing their Wi-Fi Positioning System (WPS) to rave reviews in 2003, Skyhook now offers a hybrid technology (XPS) that combines the signals from GPS, WPS, and cellular towers. Basically, they’re making location positioning faster, more accurate, and more reliable for everybody.
We chatted with Skyhook’s VP of Marketing, Kate Imbach, about location-based services, what’s cooking at Skyhook, and what the future holds. In addition to her work at Skyhook, Imbach is also Co-Founder and Organizer at the Boston and Silicon Valley chapters of Mobile Monday (MoMo), the world’s largest mobile industry community.
Featured recently on our list of Boston’s Mobile Industry Heavy Hitters we were excited to pick Imbach’s brain. Here’s what she had to say: (more…)

TECH Cocktail Boston took place last night at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center — otherwise known as NERD — where 14 chosen startup teams displayed their products.
This showcase concentrated on educating the startup community on what organizers deemed the hottest companies in the Boston area. Spaced out around NERD at different tables, teams setup their computers to give the audience the chance at a hands-on experience with the new web products.
TECH Cocktail was founded in May of 2006 by Frank Gruber and Eric Olson as a community-building event. The event has morphed into one that now takes place in many cities across the country. Boston has been home to four TECH Cocktail events now. It’s a great way to connect the media, entrepreneurs, investors and general public to new ideas through a collaborative environment where people can amplify the ideas of the local innovators! (more…)

One hundred degree heat didn’t stop upwards of 100 people making the trek from the Kendall Square T stop to SCVNGR’s new office at the old Orange Labs on Second Street in Cambridge last night. The DartBoston community was welcomed to the ninth episode of Capitalize with Upper Crust pizza, cold drinks and a bit of networking before this month’s Capitalize event kicked off.
The crowd was full of newbies excited about seeing Peekaboo Mobile pitch to Highland Capital Partners, but also to network and check out the hot new space that SCVNGR just landed a month ago — complete with bamboo gardens, chic workspaces and a sprawling amount of space to dominate. We were all in awe. How can one pitch their way to landing that accelerator-VC check to help get their startup into a space like SCVNGR’s?

Alex Taussig of Highland Capital Partners
It was the question on everyone’s minds.
The cool thing about this location is that Seth Priebatsch, the 20-something CEO of SCVNGR, sees the space as one where events like Capitalize can and should occur all the time. He and his employees want to support other young entrepreneurs in the area and host entrepreneurial events to get the community interacting.
Last night, Alex Taussig and Matt Nichols of Highland Capital Partners had the privilege of putting Ben Dolgoff and Mike Fruzzetti of Peekaboo Mobile on the hot seat in front of a large group of inquiring minds. It takes guts to present to a VC in the boardroom, but when you have a 100 others watching you as well, then it is really something to be proud of.
Since you can all watch the video of Peekaboo’s pitch to Highland, we figured it would be more useful to spotlight a few things that we can all learn from a VC pitch like Peekaboo’s and what you should have prepared if you’re ever on DartBoston’s monthly boardroom-style pitch event, Capitalize. Stepping into the MIT Museum, one would expect to be taken to a world of past inventions and artifacts of genius.
At last night’s event, however, MoMo Boston transformed the space and gave people a taste of the future by gathering together over 30 of the Commonwealth’s most innovative and promising mobile startups. Amidst the antique machines and robotic arms on display were up-and-comers demoing and explaining their concepts to a gathering of a few hundred in attendance.
Most every spectrum of mobile was represented as curious attendees nearly filled both the upstairs and downstairs spaces. They listened to the startupers share their ideas for the future of mobile. After grabbing some snacks and beers to wash it down, we made our rounds and spoke with many of the companies ourselves. (more…)

DartBoston was Pokin' Holes again last night
Last night, DartBoston, a Boston-based organization of young people helping one another start companies, celebrated its first birthday at Bocoup Loft, a web development startup in Fort Point.
The scene was celebratory, but it was still business as usual for the young entrepreneurs in attendance. Cortlandt Johnson, one of the co-founders, hosted the 48th episode of Pokin’ Holes, Dart’s signature online video show, which features a different local startup in each episode. The company on the hot seat for this go-around was Peekaboo Mobile, which we’ve told you about before, and as usual, the founders presented before the audience and then discussion was opened up to three panelists, who “poke holes” in the company and generate ideas for improvement.
The show, which was originally held weekly at bars around Boston, transitioned to a monthly format this month. Both Pokin’ Holes and Capitalize, another monthly show hosted by DartBoston in which an early-stage startup pitches their company to a venture capital firm, are live streamed on the Dart website. On average, 40 people watch the shows live online. Viewers can also participate in a live chat discussion while the episode streams live. One rule that DartBoston has stuck to throughout the past year is that the company founders have to be under 30. This gives young startupers a chance to gain both public speaking experience and publicity in a community that tends to favor and reward companies founded by more established entrepreneurs.
Peekaboo Mobile, whose motto is “where deals find you,” offers users local coupons that they can redeem via an iPhone application, and was co-founded by Mike Fruzzetti and Ben Dolgoff. Don’t worry Android and Blackberry users; they will soon have an application for you too. (more…)

Localytics secures $700k in their first round of funding
Smartphones are quickly taking over the cell phone markets — goodbye flip phones, hello multi-media, web-enabled, and touchscreen phones! Mobile applications played a major role in the smartphone’s success and have become an enormous market themselves.
Yesterday, Localytics, a software company that gives mobile app developers in-depth analytics in real-time for their applications, announced the closing of $700k in its first round of funding. Localytics is another mobile success story for Boston and is helping make the city even more of a leader in mobile development. (more…)

Peekaboo doesn't make you work for coupons.
Remember when cell phone ringtones were a big deal? The ringtone trend didn’t last long because mobile technology is developing fast; right now we’re all going crazy over Foursquare and Gowalla — things I couldn’t have imagined when I was obsessed with ringtones. Geo-location technology is here to stay, but will Foursquare and Gowalla’s popularity and importance die down like the ringtone?
Meet Boston-based Peekaboo, which is ahead of the mobile trend — games and check-ins aren’t required to get coupons with this mobile app.
Co-founders of Byte Ventures, Michael Fruzzetti and Ben Dolgoff, along with an off-shore development team, have created Peekaboo, an iPhone app that gives you coupons based on your location. Using Boston as their beta-test city, Peekaboo currently registers your location and then lists the businesses in your radius that are offering deals. It’s simple: Present the respective coupon via your iPhone and save some money. (more…)

DEMO was in Boston last night!
Last night, I walked in to FELT on Washington Street, and I was promptly met with the excitement I had heard the DEMO conference was known for. Matt Marshall, the editor at Venture Beat and the producer of DEMO is an amazing ambassador for entrepreneurs all around the globe.
DEMO is criss-crossing the country on their innovation tour, and of course Marshall mentioned that Boston is one of the DEMO team’s favorite startup communities. Last night, six hand-selected companies got the opportunity to pitch the crowd of investors, fellow entrepreneurs and members of the press. Each company was supposed to pitch for three minutes, though a couple chose to ignore DEMO Coordinator Neal Silverman’s “time is up” signal. (Anyone out there have an App to help with this?)
Marshall made it a point to excite the crowd about the current entrepreneurial climate, explaining to the audience that there is no better time than in a recession to be starting a company. Entrepreneurs will be the ones creating the jobs that our country needs. As Matt put it, “What wakes me up everyday are the companies. What drives me everyday are the companies.” Everyone at this event certainly seemed on board with Marshall’s message, with much excitement surrounding the companies and products in the room. (more…)
