Editor’s Note on 7/29/2010: PlanHawk was not available on the iTunes App Store for a short while, but it’s back and better than ever according to the developers at Kidoc.
On Thursday, July 22, Kidoc LLC announced an exciting new product for iPhone iOS4 users: PlanHawk.
This mobile app fixes a serious problem many iPhone users face on a monthly basis: Exceeding their data plan coverage.
With the new AT&T capped data plans, users face the problem of going over their limit, and being charged excessive fees. PlanHawk’s $.99 application monitors the phone’s data usage, allowing people to avoid steep charges.
This application is especially useful to iPhone 4 users, who now can use HD video and stream rich media. These new features eat up data at an alarming rate, and could force you way over your limit very quickly without you knowing.
And honestly, do you really know how much data certain applications and functions take up? There is no sign that says, “HD video will use 25 MB in 30 minutes.”
This is where PlanHawk can help you start to understand what takes up data. (more…)

Local devs from Appearian showcase a new app
Last night saw the fifth stallment of the always-fun DrinksOnTap, organized by our friends at Brookline-based RaizLabs. Held at its regular home at the Asgard in Cambridge, the event brought together local developers, entrepreneurs, and mobile enthusiasts.
The topic of the night was Apple’s new operating system, iOS4, and all the new capabilities developers can tap into for both iPhone and iPad. Tons of local devs came prepared to share their newest creations.
DrinksOnTap happens every few months, and the event draws some serious pros from the local mobile development scene, and it’s super casual and laid back. If you like beer and are into learning about the cutting edge of iPhone and iPad Apps, it’s definitely an event worth attending.
On to the demos and presentations! (more…)

In the world of smartphones, nowadays apps are all the rage. And although the iPhone and Android platforms seem to be getting most of the attention, it’s important not to forget that Research In Motion’s (RIM) Blackberry still maintains a dominant market share in the U.S. and is another potential goldmine for developers.
So we’re wondering… where’s the love, Boston devs?
Although research released this month suggests RIM has lost 2% of the market share, BB’s come a long way since securing itself this past decade as the de facto device for corporate users and is now also a top choice for general retail consumers.

Join the New England Blackberry Developer's Group on Meetup.com
With about 20 million users worldwide, half of all Berries sold are now flying off the shelves and into the pockets of students, moms, and average Joes. To fuel this shift, RIM’s put a lot of effort into building solid devices designed for those users and also enhancing its OS to include more multimedia support, a strong app ecosystem, and many other features that people now expect from smartphones. What Blackberry seems to be lacking, though, is a loud and proud developer community – and that needs to change!
In an attempt to correct this, Chris Baldwin of SoftArtisans has been organizing the New England Blackberry Developers Meetup here in Boston. The Meetup is one of three RIM-sponsored groups around the world where devs and industry professionals can gather to learn, share ideas, and get a sneak peek at exciting new developments coming to Blackberry. We attended the third installment of the Meetup this past Tuesday over in Kendall Square. (more…)

iPhone 4 lands Thursday. Here's how to afford it:
Hey, Boston Apple Fans: You’ve already ordered the iPhone 4, dropping on Thursday, so what are you going to do with your current iPhone 3G?
(The new iPhone operating system, iOS4, launches today so you can check it out on your current iPhone, but you’ll surely be left wanting more…)
Why not sell it?
While this sounds like the ideal option, it isn’t easy if you don’t have an existing account on eBay, a desperate little brother, or some other go-to way of exchanging your iPhone for cash.
That is, unless you know about Gazelle and NextWorth — Two local companies looking to buy your iPhone 3G, clean it up, and re-sell it to an audience of buyers aching to get their hands on your ostensibly outdated hardware. These companies both fall under the online sales tagline of “reCommerce,” or eCommerce for the reselling crowd, and they’re both offering a considerable amount of money in exchange for iPhone 3G. Mocospace puts the focus on their Android app during the launch
Are you on MocoSpace? It’s the first and largest social networking site on the mobile web. MocoSpace isn’t exclusive to those with smartphones; as a MocoSpace user you can share videos, photos and music, and chat with friends on your cellphone’s mobile web. With smartphones taking over the cellphone market, MocoSpace released their first Android and iPhone applications in a soft launch last week and made the official announcement on May 20th.
Though MocoSpace’s iPhone and Android apps were released simultaneously, the iPhone app wasn’t mentioned, which leads us to believe the majority of MocoSpace’s smartphone users are on Android devices.
Both the Android and the iPhone MocoSpace apps will let users interact with others who are live on the application or mobile web. Users will also be able to upload photos, view people’s profiles, comment, and receive message notifications. While it sounds simple, the message that MocoSpace sent by focusing on the Android app instead of the iPhone was loud and clear. (more…)

WHERE app rolls out check-in feature
Location is everything these days. GPS-enabled smartphones let you share your location with your friends and can enable users to score some sweet deals from nearby businesses. The benefits to users are obvious.
Boston’s WHERE mobile applications was one of the first mobile apps to use GPS location technology to find their users restaurants, shopping, gas stations, and things to do based on what city or town they were in. Yesterday, WHERE added business check-ins to their already industry-leading local search and recommendation mobile application. (more…)

Viruses, Malware, & Spyware are no longer threats for just PC owners. Malicious software is steadily making it’s way into our pockets. Blackberries, iPhones, Android devices and the like are all at risk of infection. And since these devices carry our most personal information – GPS coordinates, Emails, contacts, etc. – hackers are working hard to crack the walls to this new frontier of snooping and information theft.
Over the past couple of years, cybercriminals have begun shifting their focus from the typical web-based approaches of dispensing malware (malicious software) and viruses to P2P networks and mobile devices.
Security researchers at Kaspersky Labs say that it will likely take much less time for viruses to become a money-making industry in the mobile market than it did for computers. “This year and the next year we expect to see the industrialization of smartphone malware,” says Eugene Kaspersky.
Although infection can occur in many number of ways (SMS, Email, websites, etc.), people blindly downloading apps of all flavors are prime targets. If your device is penetrated, cybercriminals would not only have the ability to cripple your phone’s software, but they could also pinpoint your exact coordinates, track all your incoming and outgoing messages, activate your mic to record any audio in the room, and much more. Creepy.
But, wait… app stores are safe, right? Not exactly. (more…)

Over the past year or so, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with many local startups and budding entrepreneurs about the mobile space. Some of them are already banking their businesses on mobile user experiences and interactions, while many more are still just figuring out how to “get into mobile.” If you’re in the latter group and haven’t figured it out yet, this post might be helpful…
Whether you’re in tech, retail, or whathaveyou, it’s becoming increasingly important to consider creating a mobile presence for your business. As smartphone sales continue to grow, more and more people are consuming information and interacting with the web and brands through mobile devices. Gartner estimates that by 2013, there will be more internet-enabled phones worldwide than PCs. If you’d like to better reach these people, now is the perfect time to enter the mobile arena. (more…)

Bookmark BostInno on iPhone and you get this button!
This week, a hundred companies you know and love dumped tons of money and countless man-hours into developing iPhone Apps you will never use. It might be really cool but chances are you’ll never think to look for it. Or maybe you will look for it and find it, but it just won’t offer what you want on your iPhone or iTouch.
Some companies feel that an iPhone App is the perfect solution for users so they shell out the cash. Other companies build their apps on the cheap. But as with social media, sometimes getting involved in everything you can do online as a company (and not everything you should do) can lead to nothing but wasted time, lost revenues and serious frustration trying to make sure it’s all engaging.
The truth is, even if an iPhone App makes sense for a small portion of a website’s users, it can be a big waste of time and money.
That’s why BostInnovation is offering a compromise: our new iPhone button. Here’s how I made it in two simple steps: (more…)

Check out these iPhone Apps from Boston
As the advertising feud between AT&T and Verizon — and the smart phones they carry — heats up this Holiday Season, it can be hard to decide which to choose.
Although Verizon’s Droid is gaining popularity, it still can’t compete with iPhone’s 6.4 million active users in the United States.
One thing that sets the iPhone apart is the App Store, which has not only changed the way we use cell phones, it’s also created a whole online marketplace.
Boston is filled with young early adopters — people who are willing to test out new technology. So with all the demand for iPhone Apps in Boston, it’s not surprising that tons of iPhone Applications have been created by Boston developers.
Here are ten of our favorite iPhone Apps from Boston: (more…)
