First-Ever FutureM to Unite Boston’s Marketing Pros

FutureM LogoThe world of marketing as we once knew it has changed dramatically in the past five years alone. It has moved away from traditional media marketing including TV, radio and magazine advertisements, and is now more present than ever on the Internet, mobile phones, and other new media outlets.

As Brian Halligan, CEO of locally-based marketing software provider HubSpot, wrote in a recent blog post, Boston was first described as the ‘hub’ of the universe by Oliver Wendell Holmes nearly 100 years ago, and it’s now the hub of New Marketing. That fact will soon be celebrated at FutureM from October 4-8.

FutureM, organized by our friends at MITX, will be the first ever week-long marketing summit featuring the brightest in the field, including entrepreneurs and technology gurus alike. Massachusetts is rich in mobile advertisers, analytics experts, pioneers in online communities and video bloggers. There was no better place for FutureM to start than right here in Boston.

We at BostInnovation are very excited to follow and attend this first-ever event. We truly believe Boston to be a city that is innovative, technologically advanced, and marketing-centric — and we hope FutureM can communicate some of that with a week of celebration and information.

We have seen the rise of many now-famous marketers and technology evangelists right here in Boston, including Chris Brogan, David Meerman Scott, Edward Boches, Seth Godin and Halligan; solid proof that we are breeding next generation marketers seeking to disrupt and improve the marketing arena.

Many of these professionals are sure to attend, along with a brilliant following of committee members including: Joe Grimaldi, CEO of Mullen; Kiki Mills, President of MITX; Chris Hughes, Co-Founder of Facebook and Dave Balter, Founder and CEO of BzzAgent. (more…)

Inside Mayor Menino’s Housing Symposium on the Innovation District

Editor’s Note: The Innovation District website is now live. Check it out at InnovationDistrict.org.

Innovation District LogoThis morning, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino’s office held an invite-only symposium about the future of Boston’s new Innovation District (I.D.), which is being created in what’s currently the South Boston Waterfront and the Marine Industrial Park. The City of Boston is the first city government to actively seek to create something like this.

BostInnovation was there to hear six top architects talk about innovative sectors and buildings already impacting communities across the U.S. and around the world. The audience was comprised of approximately 30 local property developers, most of whom own land in the new Innovation District or are interested in hearing about how they might invest in the I.D.

Innovation District Twitter LogoWhen we first heard the City of Boston was bringing a bunch of architects together to talk about the I.D., the first thing we worried about was that they might be staging a debate about design aesthetics. Of course, building up the I.D. so it looks innovative will be something we all want to see happen, but we at BostInnovation are more concerned with the functionality and affordability of buildings developed in the I.D.

Rest assured, BostInnovators, the Mayor’s Housing Symposium was focused on exactly these topics. Talk centered much more on functionality and overall viability than design particulars.

“We’ve had a lot of folks come forward with different ideas on what the Innovation District should be,” said Menino. “What I’m looking for and what the City is looking for is that we use the best minds we have and use the creativity we have to create proposals to re-develop that area. A lot of the presentations we’ve had have really opened up our eyes.”

Since the second annual “Innovation Month” is now in full effect, we thought it would be a perfect time to reflect on the developments that have taken place over the last year in Boston’s innovation economy. BostInnovation recently celebrated our half-birthday and it seems only fitting that we take a step back to talk about what we’ve witnessed while keeping a vigilant eye on the future of the local startup ecosystem.

Scott Kirsner

First, we need to give a special thanks to Scott Kirsner for starting Innovation Month and coining the term “innovation economy” in the first place.  Scott’s coverage of the area has helped shine the light on some of the best and brightest entrepreneurs we have here in New England. He kicked off this year’s Innovation Month by declaring that we need better connectivity between college campuses and the innovation economy. Here at BostInnovation, we announced in early May our commitment to building strong relationships between the ecosystem and college campuses with our new CampusConnect program, and we appreciate Scott’s shared enthusiasm.

So, on to the biggest ecosystem developments that have taken place since BostInnovation began!  There are a lot, so let’s dive right in: (more…)
