Boston-based ProctorCam Takes Monitored Testing onto the Internet

ProctorCam is banking on the rise of online learning

Sometimes the best ideas for a new company can come from the strangest places. Rob Toof, the Founder and CEO of Boston-based ProctorCam, found the pain point his company addresses through his mother.

“My mom was taking a class and had to go to this testing center that was two hours away,” says Toof. “I said, ‘There’s got to be a way to do this online.’

“ProctorCam is now a platform for adding security around any Internet-based test. Our solution can sit on top of those tests. Even though our foundation is in distance learning, we see foundations for in-class use as well.”

Toof did a little research after seeing his mom’s frustration, and discovered that Internet-based testing is growing 30 percent per year, so he set out to create ProctorCam, a company that delivers live, human-based test monitoring via webcam. The bootstrapped company began in 2007 with a test trial at Boston University using a third-party video platform.

“We ultimately said, we’ve got to build our own platform, because this third-party thing is starting to get expensive,” says Toof. “Now, we’re in the process of launching that platform. We really had a Porsche with our first platform, when what we really needed was a nice, pimped out Scion.”

The company currently employs 21 video proctors and nine developers, all of whom work virtually. (more…)

BzzAgent’s Artist-in-Residence Showing at the Liberty Hotel Tonight

Artist Seth Minkin's Take on BostInnovation

Minkin took a minute to get creative with our brand!

There aren’t many offices that better characterize the Boston startup scene than BzzAgent‘s place on Harrison Ave. With a myriad of talented professionals working for various companies inside the space, BzzAgent CEO Dave Balter has created something of a microcosm of the Boston innovation scene inside the former factory space leased by his company.

Aside from the half-dozen or so awesome companies also occupying BzzAgent’s space — including Swaptree, ProctorCam and Alphabet Arm — there’s one entrepreneur you might not expect to find: Artist-in-residence Seth Minkin.

Believe it or not, Minkin actually creates all of his paintings in the middle of BzzAgent’s office!

Minkin’s art will be on display starting at 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the Liberty Hotel tonight for one night only. Admission and wine are free to fans of his work.

How BzzAgent is Finally Getting Generation Y to Listen

BzzAgent is changing the way brands treat consumers

Boston’s recent warm weather streak has brought the college students out of winter hibernation.

Stand in a high-traffic spot on any campus in town and you’ll see them. Armed with iPods and Blackberries, they are on the move and totally plugged in from the time they leave their dorms to the time they return. The question is, how do you interrupt them and get them to pay attention to your brand these days?

The answer: You don’t.

College students, the majority of the Generation Y population, will never be responsive to traditional advertising campaigns. They’ve become accustomed to the thousands of advertisements infiltrating their personal space on a daily basis, and they’ve learned to tune them out.

College students aren’t the only consumers out there, no. But they’re a big demographic that a long list of people are trying to reach. Marketers have unsuccessfully tried over and over again to target this crowd, which has been accused of being unresponsive and entitled. Is marketing to Gen Y a lost cause?

No. It’s not a lost cause, but it will forever remain a challenge — a challenge that Boston startup BzzAgent helps clients like Dunkin DonutsNational Geographic, and Lee Jeans face every day. Instead of forcing advertisements on consumers, BzzAgent is taking a different approach and are letting the consumer do the talking. Dave Balter, Founder and CEO of BzzAgent gave me the breakdown of how his company works on a telephone interview this week. (more…)
