VIDEO RECAP: The BeIn Block Party was a Hit!

The BostInnovation and Mobile Monday BeIn Block Party was held yesterday afternoon in Downtown Crossing with help from The City of Boston, The Boston Phoenix, The Downtown Crossing Partnership, WFNX, Boston Redevelopment Authority, Budweiser and many others. For the teams at BostInno and MoMo, it was a chance to see over 500 of our closest friends from the tech, innovation and mobile scenes here in Boston. For our friends, it was a chance to get together, network, maybe talk a little shop, and definitely have a good time. Here’s a snippet of what unfolded:

SCVNGR’s Brand New “Social Check-in” Feature Launched Today

scvngr logoCambridge-based mobile geo-gaming platform SCVNGR launched a brand new functionality this morning, which will allow SCVNGR users to perform a new kind of check-in currently unavailable on any other platform. Simply put, the “social check-in” could mean making social networking a whole lot more social in the traditional sense of the word.

SCVNGR Social Check-in 3“Checking-in is fun. And people check-in on SCVNGR all the time, everyday. And it’s great.” said SCVNGR CEO and “Chief Ninja” Seth Priebatsch in a press release. “But doing the social check-in on SCVNGR with others is way more fun. Because checking-in by yourself is kind of a solitary activity. In fact, if you think about it, all those people checking-in alone are really just playing with themselves.”

The new functionality works a little bit like the popular Bump application, but deploys a new technology SCVNGR have developed that utilizes “near-field device-to-device recognition.” Social check-ins on SCVNGR can connect an unlimited number of iPhones and Androids at a place – not just two.

Users are encouraged to bump phones with one another to successfully complete the social check-in together, kind of like you would bump glasses together for a “Cheers!” (more…)

BostInnovation Secures $25M, Will Move to Silicon Valley

BostInno is Going Going Back Back to Cali CaliAfter four months of pushing a seemingly constant stream of content about the Boston tech and innovation sector, BostInnovation is excited to announce that we’ve recently acquired a Series A round of funding to the tune of $25M. That’s right, ladies and gents: We’re rich, so we’re moving to Silicon Valley to soak up the sun and waste away in glorious exile.

In its first quarter-year of operation, BostInnovation has published over 225 articles on a myriad of innovative ideas, including awesome new technologies, brand-spanking-new hardware, cutting edge companies and social media trends. That effort has resulted in over 500 comments and thousands of re-tweets on Twitter …and now we’re super rich! (more…)

CitySquares Improving Local Search for Consumers and Business Owners Alike

CitySquares is deploying a new functionality that rocks

Since the creation of Boston-based CitySquares.com in 2005, the company’s mission has been focused on the “representation of your neighborhood,” says co-founder Ben Saren. This is apparent through their dedication to not only helping consumers, but local businesses as well.

What makes CitySquares really stand out in the local search market though, are the services it offers.

“We are not just a directory,” says Saren, and he couldn’t be more right. The company also provides local businesses with the ability to create their own profiles on the site, which is very useful to businesses without the resources to build their own Web sites. Along with a profile, they also offer SEO services, and on-site advertising to the same local businesses. (more…)

BostInno’s “Shh Secret Party” an Instant Success

Shhhhhoot that was a lot of fun!

Last night, the BostInnovation staff held our first-ever event for the local tech community. Many libations were consumed, and approximately 45 of our most fervent readers and ardent supporters turned out to talk informally about the cultural shift happening in Boston’s tech sector.

Myself and the other event coordinators re-convened this morning to discuss the tenor of the night and overall value of the gathering, and our impressions were unanimous: BostInno’s “Shh Secret Party” was an instant success.

With the undercurrent in the tech sector being one of reform and transparency, it was our goal to create an event where people could bypass the stale and impersonal flavor of many of the “social” tech gatherings taking place in and around Boston of late. We think we did just that. (more…)

BostInno’s Brand New Anti-iPhone App

Bookmark BostInno on iPhone and you get this button!

This week, a hundred companies you know and love dumped tons of money and countless man-hours into developing iPhone Apps you will never use. It might be really cool but chances are you’ll never think to look for it. Or maybe you will look for it and find it, but it just won’t offer what you want on your iPhone or iTouch.

Some companies feel that an iPhone App is the perfect solution for users so they shell out the cash. Other companies build their apps on the cheap. But as with social media, sometimes getting involved in everything you can do online as a company (and not everything you should do) can lead to nothing but wasted time, lost revenues and serious frustration trying to make sure it’s all engaging.

The truth is, even if an iPhone App makes sense for a small portion of a website’s users, it can be a big waste of time and money.

That’s why BostInnovation is offering a compromise: our new iPhone button. Here’s how I made it in two simple steps: (more…)

Shh! BostInnovation to Throw Down Feb. 19!

Shhhhhh. It's TOP SECRET!

That’s right, ladies and gents. BostInnovation is hosting it’s first-ever event. We’re currently talking about it on Twitter using the hashtag #BostInno.

So what’s the point of the event?

The point of this event is to get a small (hopefully fairly disconnected) group of our readers together to partake in a few libations, talk about what BostInnovation should cover, and discuss the projects of the individuals in attendance.

Essentially, the point of the event would be to help all of us build real, friendly connections within the tech community. We really want to socialize with you people and find out what you’re doing — not spit BS at each other between lectures. What better to facilitate the creation of good friends than small events that integrate tippling? (more…)
