Boston, please put your tray tables in the upright and locked position, sit back, and enjoy the ride. Boston is filled with well-traveled citizens and a huge indicator of that can be found on the local startup scene. We’re bringing you 10 mobile applications and websites that all focus on travel — these locally grown apps and websites make it easier for you to get from Point A to Point B, find the best restaurants in town, and plan sweet itineraries.
Today is the first day of summer, so before you pack your bags for vacation, check out these websites and download these apps:
TripAdvisor - Headquartered in Newton, Mass., TripAdvisor’s website and multi-platform mobile application lets you find flights, hotels, cruises, and things to do during your trip in 70,000 cities around the world.
- Get the most out of your trip: TripAdvisor recently launched their “Vacation Rentals” feature, connecting realtors with travelers who are so over hotels and want to stay in a furnished apartment or home.
Goby – Boston’s Goby, an “adventure search engine” and iPhone application, helps you find things to do based on your interests, location, and what time you’re available. Then, the products gives you search results with pictures, descriptions, music samples, and Google maps.
- Get the most out of your trip: Download Goby’s free iPhone app and find things to do instantly after touching down in your destination city — search through categories, sort your results based on distance or price, and share your plans with your social networks from this app.
Suite Arrival – The last thing you need to worry about on your vacation are toiletries, and Suite Arrival lets you pre-order things like shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and shaving cream. The company ships it straight to your accommodations, so all your favorite personal care products are at your room when you arrive.
- Get the most out of your trip: Airport security can be brutal — especially when it comes to liquids. Suite Arrival’s moderately priced, travel size bottles will have you breezing through security.
FlightView – Airplane tracker FlightView’s Flight Tracker system gives you real time flight information online and via their BlackBerry, iPhone, and Palm applications.
- Get the most out of your trip: The Flight Tracker mobile app syncs with your smartphone’s calendar and alert system. Whenever a flight is delayed, under a weather advisory, or canceled, you’ll be notified instantly.
WHERE – The mobile application available for all major smartphones provided by WHERE helps you find everything from four star restaurants to gas stations. WHERE also gives you reviews and directions, lets you track where you’ve been, and provides you with coupons based on your location.
- Get the most out of your trip: Is it a rainy day? Find nearby movie theaters, watch trailers, and get showtime listings all on the WHERE application. WHERE also finds you the gas stations with the lowest prices using crowd-sourced data. If you haven’t had time to research your destination, WHERE is a must-have app.
After downloading all of these apps and pre-purchasing your travel essentials, you’ll be the coolest traveler out there. You won’t get lost and you’ll know what’s going on at all times. Just promise us one thing: Please come home to Boston when your trip is over.
