5 Boston Startups Who Are Killing it on Twitter

Get your Twitter fix with these five companies

If you use Twitter, you know it can sometimes be more of a crossroads than anything else. Often, we see our favorite tweeters take time off from participating and, without even thinking about it, we’re on to the next thing. It’s for this reason that I thought I’d share a few of my favorite, most engaging local startup companies on Twitter right now.

Thanks to Jason Evanish of Greenhorn Connect, who showed me Marsh Sutherland’s list of Boston startups, I’ve scoured the local Twittersphere and found you what I think are the hottest Boston startups on Twitter.

1. The Daily Grommet- 3,268 followers- The Daily Grommet is an online marketplace that features new products daily. Based in Lexington, Mass., The Daily Grommet  is not only tweeting about the latest products to hit the market, but they’re doing their part for the Twitter community and getting engaged. Expect @replies, #FollowFridays, and tips for entrepreneurs. Yeah, I’ll say it: Girl Power!

2. Harvest Power- 1,162 followers- Ashley Metz mentioned Harvest Power early this month when she did a feature on them and their  innovative compost technology. Who knew a clean-tech company could have such a cool tweet stream? For all of you interested in clean-tech or just trying to go be a little more green, Harvest Power is an account you should follow. They’re tweeting cool national stories about the things being done to reduce waste and giving props to bloggers who are writing about the clean-tech space.

3. Social Grow- 16,128 followers- Social Grow is a Windows (and soon to be Mac) desktop application that helps you connect with friends on various social networks. Their Twitter following is impressive and is one of the highest we’ve seen in comparison to other area startups. They’re tweeting out data on networks like Twitter and keeping us updated on their much-anticipated Mac software launch.

4. The Second Glass-3,313 followers- We might share an office space with The Second Glass, but we can’t ignore their Twitter page. The Second Glass is bringing wine to the masses; their e-newsletters, tweets, and publications are easy to consume and understand. They’re bringing local, young wine lovers information about where to get their favorite cheap wines and so much more. Look for tweets about their temporary tattoos and cools things of all kinds going on in Boston.

5. Zeo-1,639 followers- The Zeo headband monitors your sleep cycle and then gives you daily reports about when you were in light, deep, and REM sleep. The cool thing about their Twitter engagement is that the share all kinds of sleep facts, and that’s something we could all know a little more about. This is a company that’s really keeping the conversation flowing — asking questions, sharing facts, and helping people find solutions to sleep problems, even when those solutions aren’t all about Zeo. Learn cool stuff about the REM cycle, Zeo’s sweet technology, and what they’re doing to change the way you sleep by following them.

It’s important to have a designated tweeter at your startup so you can engage potential customers and establish yourself in the consumer market. It also makes it too easy to get feedback about your products, which can help you iterate faster. That being said, Boston startups, it’s on! It’s time to bring your Twitter game to a higher level.

Jennie, thanks for mentioning my @marshsutherland/boston-startups-to-follow Twitter list and including @SocialGrow! Ken is doing a marvelous job creating brand awareness for SocialGrow, even before we had launched our Alpha application.

I think it's important for startups in Boston to support one another and I want to give visibility for the hottest ones in Boston.

I'm interested more nominations for inclusion in the list. Please feel free to nominate them by messaging me @marshsutherland on Twitter!

  • Hi Jennie,

Thank you for including us on your list, especially among such distinguished company! As @SocialGrow's Chief Tweeter (or "Chief Twit" when I don't proofread my tweets before sending them...), it's all about our followers, who are also the target customers for SocialGrow's social networking products and services.

A crazy, 24x7, *completely* public mashup of marketing, public relations, customer service, and product development, Twitter has been an incredible tool for helping us to listen and share.

As a marketer, I find Twitter fascinating for the constant innovation I see in how people are using it. As a small business owner, I find Twitter cost-effective for bringing people to our brand who otherwise might never have "discovered" us.

    Regards,

    -K

Does Boston Inno have a list of all the cool peeps you suggest to follow on Twitter? That would be cool :)
  • jenniewhite
We had that idea this morning. ESP, Morgan? We're going to start working on it, thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the kudos! Boston based RunKeeper http://twitter.com/RUNKEEPER does a GREAT job of engaging their users and really listening to feedback from their community on twitter! AND they have over 6,000 followers!
  • jenniewhite
Ironically, our buddy Matt just did a post on them! Literally, it's the post before this one. Runkeeper is amazing, huh? They've changed interact through exercise. I would have never thought the day would come when we'd be publishing our daily runs for all of our friends to see!
  • Thanks for the props Jennie! I shouted a "Woo hoo" when I read your post. We're really grooving on the kinds of interactions that surface on Twitter. We find new Grommets and really energized people who want to change the world, the way we do. I'm going to be speaking at SXSW next month and hope the Twitterverse there really dives in on some new Grommet ideas.

At the moment, three of us tweet, which does cause a little confusion. And I tweet "CEO" and personal stuff from @julespieri. I'm interested to hear how other people handle the multiple Tweeters challenge. Not technically. I mean communication-wise.

I immediately recognized how genuine and fun the Daily Grommet's tweets were and that's why I put you on the top of the list. You interact with your loyal followers and Grommet newbies the right way! You can tell there are people behind the Daily Grommet account and that is so important because it establishes trust in the community.

I understand how the three tweeters could get a little confusing. I think as long as it's uniformed and your sending the same message then it's fine. With more people tweeting, that means more tweets and that's always a good thing. One thing I don't like are the tweets with the initials attached (^), it makes the company seem disparate.

    Thanks for stopping by Jules!
