Video: The Vending Machine of the Future

Every so often one finds a piece of technology so stunning that it invokes a sense of awe for the accomplishments of man. It seems to belong in a work of science fiction, and makes you feel worthy of living in the twenty-first century. This has been a rarity for me, but last week I stumbled upon such technology right here in Boston. I returned a few days later with Neo-Luddite Dave to grab a video of this space-aged Coke dispenser:

My roommate and I were in the Pru when he decided to check on his account balance. The nearest Sovereign bank ATM was in Copley place so we cut through the mall and headed that way. When we were done, we walked down the escalator by Starbucks, turned left toward the door, and witnessed the most futuristic piece of vending machine technology I’ve ever seen.

It was the soda machine…of the future! You would almost miss it sitting modestly in the corner of the entrance. Nearly the entire front surface is a rich touch screen display.

A collaboration of Coca-Cola and Samsung, it’s the flashiest, if not most expensive way to sell Coke.  The new Coca-Cola vending machine is truly a technological marvel, joining the ranks of the Dyson Air Multiplyer and Asahi beer-pouring robot. With such a rich, interactive interface I really had no choice but to buy a soda.

So I urge fellow Bostonians to keep an eye out for these instances of technological superiority. We may not have flying cars but I sure felt like I was living in the future buying a coke from a touch-screen computer.

*Special thanks to Neo-Luddite Dave for shooting the video. He had no verbal comment. Instead, his thoughts were captured in the photo featured below.

  • I think Coke could have expanded the visual so that during the wait, it showed the "happiness" elves bringing the bottle through to vend as if you get an inside view. I know it's an older campaign for them but this would have made the wait worth it.

  • Matt,
Pretty cool! Takes an awkwardly long time to 'vend' don't you think?
    Thanks for sharing it!

Definitely an awkward wait time that is exacerbated by the fact that you can't watch the vending process as with glass panel machines. Maybe a fun animation during the 'vend' sequence could help with that. Or they could just make the thing work faster.

They should take that time to make you feel really good about your purchase, maybe showing super models or sports stars chugging the drink at a party or something. Somehow "vending" on the screen for ten seconds doesn't do it for me. Or maybe they could have a simulated view inside the machine and have little animated characters making the beverage and moving out the vending slot.

Happy to see I tempted the wrath of the vending-machine snobs. I'll admit the thing did take too long to spit out the drink, but I've yet to see a machine that can do it in under 5 seconds. The highlight is that the interaction is a lot better than the typical number + letter button combination (ex F7 for orange soda.) The bottom line being: if you stand an old glass display vending machine next to one of these touch screens, which do you think people are going to buy from?

They're going to buy it from the touch screen vending machine. Period.

I am going to have to disagree with Tim and Dean. The new Coke vending machine is cool. It's the way of the future; it's going to change the way customers buy soda and that is a big deal. C'mon we've all experienced vending machine melt-downs where our candy bar or soda gets stuck and then we throw out our backs trying to get it out or just waste our $2.50. This machine has got to help prevent that kind of thing. I also think it's awesome that we can pay with our credit cards; pretty soon we'll be able to plug our smart phones into the machine and charge our cards that way.

Awesome find Matt, I might have to head on over to the pru and check it out.
  • Dumb Dumb Dumd Dumb, wow how totally Dumb.

Can i put Dumb in there one more time.

The only good part about that machine is that it accepts credit cards and displays context aware advertising, everything else needs a total UX/process redesign.

Oh and as the other commenter said, needs to take less than 5 seconds to swipe and deliver - anything longer than that is a hug fat dumb mistake.

    Cheers,

  • Big touch screen on a vending machine - BFD. Still takes 12 secs to vend. Needs to be <2 sec to be interesting.
