Boston’s Networking Scene: 3 Events You Must Attend

February's Boston Media Makers event with Steve Garfield

We got to talking at our “Secret Event” on Friday night about the ever-growing and often overwhelming event scene in Boston. People want to meet and connect with each other and we’re down with that, but there are better places to do that than others. Take a look at Boston TweetUp’s event calendar and on any given day you’ll see three or more events listed. Bostonians are a social bunch of people, but we can’t be at ten places at once. How do you prioritize? We have the three events you must attend in Boston. Trust us, it’s manageable and you’re going to have fun.

WebInno

WebInno is the biggest and most well known technology networking event around. About every three months WebInno puts on an event at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge. The event has two opportunities for startups to demo their products: The “Main Dish” is for approximately three companies to present their product to the entire audience. The “Side Dish” startups demo throughout the evening in a side room.

Why is it important to attend WebInno? The wide variety of people in attendance make getting your name out there easier. Webinno provides the perfect setting to meet like-minded individuals and mentors. It draws in hundreds of people and is a great place to hand out business cards and hopefully make some beneficial connections.

Boston Media Makers

“What are you doing?” That’s the question you’ll be asked when you arrive at this once-a-month event in Jamaica Plain. This is an event for everyone from video podcasters to PR people to share the projects they are working on in the video realm. In order to flesh out your ideas you need to vocalize them; it’s no use staying in “stealth mode.” The “roundtable discussion” Boston Media Makers provides is a safe environment to share your projects and hopefully connect with other individuals who can help.

Steve Garfield, the organizer of Boston Media Makers is the author of Get Seen, a book about using online video to get your business found by customers. He’s a pioneer video-blogger and lectures at Boston University and Emerson College. You’ll get the chance to pick Garfield’s brain at Boston Media Makers and talk to some other cool video hounds.

Mass Innovation Nights

Mass Innovation Nights lets you get a preview of the up and coming startup companies in Boston and they’re not just your average startup websites. MassInnovation Nights has had companies like Holistic Technologies, who invented something called the Sleep Guard, a headband-like device that you wear on to prevent you from grinding your teeth. MassInnovation Nights really gives you a peek into the innovative minds of Boston and the surrounding area.

For all of you who are looking to enter Boston’s networking scene; or as our photographer, Elizabeth McIntire, calls it “netfun,”  these are the must-see events. We linked you to all of their homepages and can’t wait to see all of  you networking cats hitting up the scene.

What are your favorite tech networking events in the Boston area? Let us know in the comments.

  • Thanks for the mention of Boston Media Makers.
  • That's a good start, but I think there a few others to keep in mind:

    Tech Tuesday
Mass TLC/Dan Bricklin's monthly event is always a great gathering of the tech community to show off what's next. There's usually a few really cool demos of new tech, often things coming from MIT.

    Vilna Shul panels
Doug Levin does an amazing job of bringing in local brilliant minds like Harvard Business School professors and local VCs, Angels and established entrepreneurs. There's great networking before and after the panels too.

    Open Coffee
This weekly Wednesday morning event always brings a diverse crowd of founders, innovators and investors together for some very productive networking. If you're anywhere near Central Square in Cambridge on Wednesdays, you gotta check it out.

Choosing what events to go to can be daunting, which is why I do GreenhornTV every week to highlight the best events of the week for the entrepreneur community (http://greenhornconnect.com/blog/greenhorntv-ep...). You can also check out our many events on our networking calendar that's focused on entrepreneurs. This week you'll find over 40 events and office hours to consider: http://greenhornconnect.com/events/calendar/201...

Look forward to seeing you all out there...there's a great community happy to meet you.

    Thanks Jason,

I agree, the events you listed are also good ones to attend, but I kind of wanted to keep it less daunting. I listed these three in hopes that people new to the "networking scene" would feel that it was manageable. These three events are a good way to get your feet wet. Overtime, those new to the scene can add more events like Tech Tuesday.

    Thanks for the comment!
  • True...and if you're young and new to the scene, I highly recommend DartBoston events, where you can meet fellow young people making things happen in the community and Cort is always around to give instant introductions and connections for newcomers.
