Do you love Boston? Facebook has you covered

We’ve told you about Boston’s Twitter, music, and YouTube scenes; now it’s time to tackle Facebook.

Facebook is where most of our social media journeys really started. Who would have known when I signed up for Facebook during my junior year of high school that I would be tweeting and blogging like crazy? When most of us signed up for Facebook, it was merely a step up from AOL’s instant messenger — a place we could communicate with friends. We could publicly brag about how many friends we had and what awesome things we did that weekend.

Well, Facebook has changed. Big time.

Now our moms are on Facebook. We just found a group with over half a million fans called I Stand In The shower For An Hour Because I Like Hot Water. That group has been in existence for less than a month. Yes, I am serious. Facebook is no longer an intimate experience shared with your classmates. Now, it is shared with everybody. With all of these changes, some great things have surfaced.

Here is what all of you Bostonians should be checking out on “the book.”

1) PAGES: The Boston Red Sox fan page has the most fans out of any Boston fan page we found. For those of you who are unfamiliar with “pages,” they are places on Facebook were people can become a supporter or “fan” of a brand, team, or product. Pages seem to be more official than “groups,” and are often started by the company involved. More on that in a second…

The Boston Red Sox fan page isn’t just active during baseball season. It’s got things going on all year long. They update the page with regular blog posts, ticket updates, and charity events. Their fan page is almost as good as watching a live game at Fenway Park.

2) APPLICATIONS: We like the Boston Facebook Application, which lets you send Boston-related gifts to friends. From Ben Affleck to the Boston Beer Company these little pictures appear on the Facebook pages of friends you send them to. They show how much of a devoted Bostonian you are.

“Applications” are developed by third-party developers, and are add-ons that can make your Facebook experience more fun. You have probably heard of Farmville before, one of Facebook’s most popular applications.

3) GROUPS: The You Know You’re From Boston When… group is off the hook. Facebook “groups” are much like “pages,” in that they let you keep up on your favorite companies, teams, locations and ideas (including hot showers) inside Facbook’s user interface. Groups are generally unofficial spaces to fan things. There’s a group like You Know You’re From Boston When… for pretty much every location in the entire world. Here are some great lines from the group:

You know you are from Boston when…

“You don’t swim in the Charles, no matter what Bill Weld tells you.”

“You believe using your turn signal is a sign of weakness.”

“You still can’t bear to watch highlights from game 6 of the 1986 World Series.”

“You have never been to Cheers.”

“The words ‘WICKED’ and ‘GOOD’ go together.”

I would keep going, but you get the picture.

There’s a quick wrap up of what fan page, application, and group are. Now if we could only “friend” Paul Pierce; that would be awesome.

Which one of your friends on Facebook is the most Boston-obsessed?

Editor’s Note: BostInnovation.com has its own Facebook Fan Page as well. Please take a second and show your support: Fan BostInnovation on Facebook!

By far the best fan page out there. I was going to put in the post, but I didn't want to overload it with bias ; ).

The "you know you're from Boston when..." group is pretty sick though. They got it spot on. I am not even originally from Boston, so I really shouldn't be talking.
