Did we meet at the Mega Tweetup?

Mega Tweetup was organized by Boston Tweetup's Joselin Mane.

Mega Tweetup was organized by Boston Tweetup's Joselin Mane.

If you were in attendance, you probably saw me at the Mega Tweetup; Joselin Mane from BostonTweetUp hosted it last Thursday night at Microsoft N.E.R.D.

I was the girl signing all the tweeple in and giving you your free drink tickets. That should trigger some of your memories!

The night started off with some hardcore networking over Bolocco burritos and Legal Seafood. Yum. It was awesome seeing people like Chris Brogan and C.C. Chapman there. Those two really know how to network!

The event was a blast and all the money raised went to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

After some networking Joseline Mane handed out Tweetup awards. One of the most prestigious awards, “Tweet-up of the Year” went to Sarah Merion for her roofup. It was well deserved; people in the Twitterverse are still talking about the roofup.

The raffle was also a huge hit. The hottest prizes were the Celtics Tickets and everybody’s favorite book, Trust Agents, by Chris Brogan. Boston tweeps donated some serious swag; Sullivan Tire gave away free oil changes!

We even had a little entertainment for the tweet-up. Rebecca Corliss from Hubspot performed with her acapella group, Common Sound. Their rendition of Jason Mraz’s “I am Yours” was out of this world.

Boston social media people were not the only ones attending. Joselin did a great job encouraging everyone to come; whether they were heavily involved in social media beforehand or not. Networking at events can often be awkward, but Joselin kept a great pace and engaged everyone. Also, you would be surprised how much a Bolocco burrito can get people talking.

Here’s what I took out of the event:

Tweetups can be daunting; especially when you do not know many people. Go in with a smile and approach people who may seem like they don’t want to be approached. It may sound weird, but those people are the ones who want to talk. They are just scared to approach you themselves. Make sure that before, during, and after the event you are tweeting. That way people will be able to chat with you again. Tweetups are about collaborating and having a good time!

Here’s my challenge to you; go to one Tweetup per month and get two business cards. Email, tweet, and facebook those two people. You will be happy you did it and there is nothing wrong with making new friends!

What do you know about Tweetups? Did you go to Mega Tweet-Up? We want to hear about it in the comments section!

  • Great post Jennie and thanks for everything you did to make this event a success. The event wouldn't have been the same without you!

Yes @CommonSound was great I was glad I was able to showcase their Awesomeness!

I remember my first tweetup about a year ago, so I/we wanted to create an environment for all and from the response it seems like we did.

See you at a tweetup soon. ;-)

You are very welcome Joselin. I had such a great time, thanks to you man! CommonSound was such a nice touch. The environment was very welcoming. All around, awesome. Weird, that I am already looking forward to next year?
  • Hi Jennie, Great write-up on the MegaTweetup! It was great to see you there, although you were so busy we hardly had a chance to chat.

I wanted to add in a little something for the experienced Tweetup attendees. The MegaTweetup was great -- I got to hang out with some Tweetup newbies. That's right -- for two of my buddies, this was their first Tweetup. (What a way to set those expectations, right Joselin?) Well, I tried to make sure they had a great time and got to meet lots of people so they will go to more Tweetups. So, if you are a Tweetup regular, make sure you help out the host (or hostess) and reach out to the new people, invite them into the circle. Introduce them around. You'll have made a new friend and cemented the reputation of Tweetups as friendly places.

Mass Innovation Nights- Hi guys! I am glad to hear you found some tweetup newbies. Like I said, tweetups can often be scary, especially if you are new the world of social media. It is important for the "regulars" to have an open mind and make it a point to welcome those who are new to the scene. If we aren't welcoming then soon enough it is just going to be the "regulars" and things will get dull. Newbies spice things up; they bring something different to the the table. Newbies, you all rock!

    See you tonight!!
